Keeping That Older Sewing Machine
A clean, lubricated older sewing machine will almost certainly outlive you!
If you are lucky enough to own and use an older sewing machine that serves you well, do think twice if you are ever advised to trade it in for a new one. New one’s do generally offer more functions and are often much lighter than vintage machines. However, many machine sewers find that for everyday sewing an older machine is more reliable and pleasurable to use.
Regular Cleaning & Lubrication
There is no suggestion here that you should not buy a new sewing machine. There are lots of things an older machine can’t do that you might want. It's more a case, if you love your older machine, of hanging on to it.
With a regular internal clean and oiling, depending how often you use it, it will always be available to enjoy.
And if you don't use it that often, like all machinery, it will pay to set it up from time-to-time, turn the knobs and give it a run just to refresh the inner mechanisms.
Fancy Owning An Older Machine
Before buying a vintage sewing machine it is worth looking on Facebook, YouTube and EBay to check out the pro’s and con’s of the different machines on offer. Older machines like Bernina, Janome or Frister Rossmann are highly thought of but you will find there are many, many more!
Servicing & Repairs
Generally, used vintage machines are very reasonably priced. It is worth checking before you buy that you have a service and repair facility locally - main dealer or independent - just in case you get an issue that you can't fix yourself.
