It's no wonder we get sewing machine issues from time-to-time when you consider that, other than one or two minor advances, the mechanism has remained the same since the late 1800’s!
With some, it's no big deal, however, with one or two others, it is advisable to fix them - before something really goes wrong.
‘Stiff’ or ‘Noisy’ Sewing Machine
A common sewing machine problem is that it feels ‘stiff’ or is ‘noisy’. Generally this is down to a lack of cleaning and lubrication. It's the sort of thing that will be covered by a full service but, if you are fairly handy, it is also something you can do yourself.
Take a look at the maintenance section of your sewing machine manual, pull together some essential tools, and watch, and re-watch, a few YouTube videos, and you will be good to go.
Once completed, turning your machine should feel smooth. When running it, it should sound ‘rhythmic’ as opposed to clunky.
Cleaning, Lubrication & A New Needle
There's no secret to keeping your sewing machine in prime condition, it's just the same as running any other reliable machine.
Regular cleaning and de-fluffing together with putting a drop of sewing machine oil - one drop - on linkages and bearings is all that's needed.
Renewing your needle fairly frequently, and using the right needle for the job, also makes good sense.

Thread & Needles
Using good quality thread and renewing your needle regularly are key factors for maintaining the standard of your stitches and the finish to your project.
Using Good Quality Thread
Using cheap, old or poor quality thread in a sewing machine is one of the most common reasons for issues. Snapping thread, missed stitches and weak seams are all signs of possible thread quality problems.
With thread and balanced stitching, there is also a recommendation that the same quality of thread is used for the top and bottom bobbins of the machine.
Changing Needles
Sewing machine needles do an enormous amount of work!
They are not expensive and changed fairly frequently, can make a huge difference.
It is not uncommon for us to find that poor stitching, or sewing machine running issues were down to an old, dull needle.
There is no hard and fast rule here but generally it is suggested that your needle is renewed every second project.
It is also critical that the right needle is used for the task. As in sewing fine delicate fabric, denim, or leather.
Final point
If you are having a stitching problem. You've checked the thread quality and inserted a new needle. Now rethread the top of the machine - with the presser foot up - and set the top tension at about midway - 4 or 5. Take a piece of waste fabric and do some test stitching to see if your issue has cleared.
